Rules of Slots

There is almost nothing so special about the rules of slots (short for slot machines): You must simply insert one or several coins into the slot and pull the handle down or press a button to start the machine – by setting its reels in motion.

Any complexity concerning the rules of slots could arise only from the different types of slots available, either in a gambling establishment or online. Traditional slot machines work in the way as described above, they have three, four, or five reels with symbols on them (the reels could actually be video monitors simulating the spinning motion) and also an increasing number of slots do not accept coins any longer, but you must make a deposit to play on them.

In order to make you win, the reels must stop in a specific alignment of symbols, called a payline. Usually you have the choice within the particular machine’s rules how many coins to insert and how many paylines to play for. Remember also that because different slots pay different amounts, you should get to know the rules of the particular machine that you intend to play on; its rules must be displayed somewhere on it.

There are two major types of slots – straight (or regular) and progressive. The payout for hitting the winning combination of symbols at straight slots is fixed, progressive slots also pay a fixed amount for a winning combination, but they offer you in addition the possibility to play for a progressive jackpot, which usually involves playing the maximum bet. And if you are indeed very lucky, you may win the jackpot that has been accruing progressively from all the people who played for that same jackpot and have respectively been adding to its increasing value.

The rules of Internet slots are pretty much the same, there are just a few new things based on the different technology:

  • Clicking the “Insert Money” button starts the game.
  • Adjusting your bet in terms of amount and currency is the next thing to do.
  • Choosing the number of paylines is next, this usually requires clicking the “Bet One” button the same number of times as the number of paylines you wish to play for. (For instance, if you chose to bet 1 dollar and clicked “Bet One” twice, this means that you bet 2 dollars on 2 paylines.) If you want to play for the progressive jackpot (which means playing for all paylines at the same time and at the maximum bet), click the “Max Bet” button. To win the progressive jackpot, you must hit the winning combination of all paylines at the same time.
  • After the bet and paylines are selected, click the “Spin” button. Some multi-spin slots offer the chance to retain a symbol for the next round by clicking the “Hold” button under that symbol if it appears on a special separate payline.
  • If you hit a winning combination, you can see how much you won by clicking the “Winner Paid” icon. All possible payouts should be displayed on a payout table visible or clickable somewhere on the web page.
  • If you wish to switch the slot, use the “Switch Machine” button.

Internet slots vary in terms of their maximum payout, they are either single- or multi-line, and they can be progressive jackpot and multi-spin slots. You may also encounter various other special symbols on them either on the reels or at some other place on the web page. These symbols give various advantages or bonuses if used, you should find out more about them by reading the rules of the particular slot.
